RUR – Region for the University, University for the Region is a strategic project of the Just Transition Operational Programme. This programme is one of the mechanisms fulfilling the European Union’s long -term vision of a climate -neutral economy. The European Union as a whole should become a climate -neutral economy by 2050. Achieving this goal forms part of the European Commission’s communication on the European Green Deal, including the proposal of a Just Transition mechanism. Meeting the above objectives will require extensive structural changes in the Czech economy. The aim of the Just Transition Programme is to mitigate the impacts of the transformation process on the economy, residents, and the environment. As this process will not affect Czech regions equally, the programme focuses only on regions that are or will be most severely impacted by the consequences of the transformation process due to their dependence on fossil fuels or industrial processes with high greenhouse gas emissions. The RUR project professionally, in an integrated and comprehensive manner prepares and supports the transformation of the Ústí nad Labem Region in response to the new realities that will determine the region’s significance within the Czech Republic and in relation to developments in other territories of advanced countries worldwide. The project is focused on eliminating existing barriers to the region’s development. “In essence, this is a comprehensive project that invests in people, human capital, know -how, talents and creativity,” says the project’s lead manager and former rector, doc. Martin Balej.
