University

The project’s lead organisation is Jan Evangelista Purkyně University in Ústí nad Labem, the only public university headquartered in the Ústí nad Labem Region and an institution that has been consistently dedicated to education and creative activities for over thirty years. The project enables it to significantly strengthen its third-mission role in the region.

The University was established in 1991, though its history dates back to 1954, when the Higher Pedagogical School was founded. This institution was transformed into the Pedagogical Institute in 1959, followed by the establishment of the Faculty of Education in Ústí nad Labem in 1964. Under Act No. 314/1991 Coll., Jan Evangelista Purkyně University in Ústí nad Labem was constituted and ceremonially inaugurated on 28 September 1991 with three faculties and one institute – the Faculty of Education, the Faculty of Social and Economic Studies, the Faculty of the Environment, and the Institute of Slavic-Germanic Studies. Today, the University has eight faculties and cares for the education of more than 8,500 students, supported by approximately 600 academic and 500 administrative and technical staff.
